So you want Speedstep but don't want to pay for Coolbook? Read on…

Installing Speedstep

Step 1. Download these two files

• GenericCPUPowerManagement Kext (Use version 1.02, thanks for the tip ashivad!)
• GenericCPUPowerManagement Application
• Download Site : http://www.superhai.com/darwin.html

Step 2. Unzip them in your Documents folder.

Step 3. Use KextHelper7 and install the kext.

Step 4. Copy the App into your Applications or Utilities.

Step 5. Add the App as a Login Startup Item and tick the Hide box.

Step 6. Restart PC and enjoy!

This is great, I just thought about taking some time to check the need for CoolBook and to write up the tutorial… ;-)

I tried, but didn't work for me. I installed the kext, but after reboot the app says something like "lost connection with kernel extension". Any ideas?

Weird - the kext installs and loads for me (1.0.2), but the application is all messed up. It shows a big green bar across the top and 2 buttons "Auto Throttle" and "Kernel Extension: Online" and that is it.

Anyone else have problems running the App?

the new 1.1 application doesn't work. I downloaded the 1.0 app and it works great:

Just found a solution: the kext must be the older version: 1.0.2. For some reason the newest one (1.1.0) does not work.

Hi, this older version is working here now. I didn't see any battery life gain yet. I'll charge it full to see how much i get.

I just wanted to ask… because my install of Leopard with 2 GB of 533 MHz RAM is slow enough and constantly rainbow wheels in order just to annoy me… apart from the battery saving, are there any real practical gains from slowing the processor and speeding it up on demand? I mean, it going up and down only screams out more and more rainbow wheels to me. Or perhaps there are some optimisations I have missed??

It's all about Battery Life. slower processor speed=less power used=longer battery life. That's it.

With a heavy operating system on a slow processor with architecture similar to Pentiums, which rainbow wheels so often you feel like you're using a G3 iBook… there must be some performance tips we can couple this power management with in order that the two can co exist nicely :) I turned off Spotlight for instance, which seemed to do something.

@zapzupnz: what Eee PC are you using? On my 1000H OS X is running like my G5 iMac and sometimes even better. Speedstep is working without any negative influence on performance.

This worked fine for me. Usually i had 3 hours on my battery. After i installed this and fully charged the eeePC, it gave me 4:30 hours battery life. So ive been using it since then and the time it gave during usage was very precise. I timed it and i ended up with 4:20 hours. Im very happy with the result.

That's great news! I get a very similar result of 4.5 hours on my 1000H also.

I'll edit the guide to mention using version 1.02 instead.

I don't notice the rainbow wheels often and mind you I'm using only 1gb of ram which I hope to upgrade soon.

The only time I notice a slow down is when my ram and cpu is under heavy load. I noticed Expose/Spaces slows down a fair bit espeically on an external monitor.

Another reason for the mod is that less cpu power=less heat=less fan-power required and that means I don't get as hot a lap also.

Timed 3 hours and 45 minutes at 800 MHz, 900 mV, 250ms. Been browsing the web this whole time, sitting in an IRC, and had my IM app running.

Hi all, I installed the two files according to the instructions… so now the GenericCPUPMControl resides in my dock upon startup. Is that all to it? Because when I click on the batt icon on my system bar on top of the screen, it shows 3 hrs of batt on a full ccharge… this doesn't seem to have improved from previous estimates. Or is the time shown there inaccurate? Many thanks.

Im on a 901 and i followed the directions, but even though i clicked hide on start up items, I still see the app when i restart. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks

Same here. When I first used it, it seemed to work perfectly, but now, while it works, it still shows up not hidden.

I was thinking is it possible to remove the speedstep application from the dock like Audiee? because sometime it annoyes me that there is no close/exit/hide button, and keyboard hide command also doesn't work. Only option is clicking on the dock icon and hide. I think it would be great to have it only on the taskbar area like audiee. What does the programmers think???

When the program is in the screen is just click outside of it. Just click on your desktop or something and it goes away. At least thats how it works for me…. I only see it when i boot, turn on the things i want to see in the status bar, click on my desktop and it wont come back untill i reboot.

This has been covered here one month ago for Audeee.
As far as I have understood you don't have to run the app in order to have the speedstepping working (the app is only for the icon in the statusbar).

I did the steps in the audieee post to remove it from the dock. I had tried it before, but I added the extra lines in the wrong area.

Is the time on the batter incorrect? After using this app, it seems as the time has gone lower. On my 901 I get about 4 and a half hours without it, With this it said about 4 hours. at 83% it says 2:17…

Just reformatted and have noticed that the speedstep mhz values are incorrect. I've tried various versions of the kext and gui but same issue. It's giving me something like 0, 150 adn 300mhz.

This may be due to the way I installed iDeneb 1.3 this time around.

I'll reformat and try again.

further to my issue…

I did a little digging and after a reformat of my eee and reinstall using the instructions provided in nhirts guide plus the latest kexts he's kindly provided I found that the issue is not the GenericCPUPowermanagement.kext but rather the Bus Speed and Processor speed detected by OSx is incorrect. I'm getting process speed @ 300mhz and fsb @ 100mhz.

I'm sure this is probably an issue already covered and I thought installing the About this Mac package would have solved this but maybe I need to do more research.

Ok I found after rebooting with now speedstep loaded it appears that the cpu processor speed is detected by OSX correctly although the fsb is still 100mhz.

After running the speedstep kext it changes the processor speed to 300mhz??? Fsb is still 100mhz also.

This is real strange.

I went and downloaded the vanilla "AppleSMBIOS.kext" and this modified Apple Air "AppleSMBIOSEFI.kext" from here : http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=108606

Rebooted and that solved the problem.

Processor is correct, FSB is corret, Battery works fine with usage time also after I installed the PowerManagement.bundle.

yeah the efi zip file has it hidden in a development dir somewhere.
