The 1002HA has just recently been released. I ordered one and can't wait to get it. Anyone else getting one? I have followed this forum for a while because I was thinking about getting a 1000h but instead chose the 1002HA. As it has just been released, and I don't think anyone has it (mine should come in a few days), I wanted to make a thread about it.

I assume to put OSX on it, I will need a modded bios. Should I ask the person at osrom.net to make a modded bios for the 1002HA? The bios is already available on Asus' site. Hopefully the internals of this are similar to the 1000h and all of the instructions and fixes for the 1000H apply for the 10002HA.

Hi Jake, I hope to do so, but things are not so clear as you mention.
Some hardware parts perhaps should have changed (imo Audio, wifi, and maybe webcam). On the other hand, more important stuff like CPU / Graphics GPU / Touchpad remain the same.
If I get one, first job will for me to swap HD with my OCZ SSD drive where already sits Leopard. Second one will be to install Leo if needed.

Please keep us informed.

I'm hitting some walls here. I tried to follow these instructions http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=110388 to boot off the E's hdd because i dont have an external dvd drive, only cd, but I don't understand how I am supposed to structure my hard drive. I've also attempted a guide described here http://ipis-osx.wikidot.com/forum/t-102817/installing-from-usb-hdd-or-flash-drive#post-311438 but OSX is refusing to format my 5gb partition of my external hdd from fat32 to osx journaled. JakeE2JakeE2 1229473003|%e %b %Y, %H:%M %Z|agohover

Yipeeee!!! Installing as I type. So I finally found out the problem with the install via partition. You need to set it up as follows.
A fat32 partition, call it "osx" or something to identify it and make it the size you want your OSX partition to be.
Make a fat32 logical partition any size you want (you will delete it later) and call it "install"
Use a program like paragon partition manager (thats the one I used) to change the install partition ID to "AF." Its not an option on the list, but just change it to AF manually.
Then, use the program from here or here (both are great resources to read if you are stuck) and start it. Leave the iso on your desktop or something. Choose the install partition in the chinese program.
One you click "start," if you did it properly, it will take a few minutes to do its thing. The log should report all success except for changing it to AF. That was the only error I encountered however it still worked.
Then reboot, choose OSX, press any key, go down to the partition containing ideneb.
From there, you should get the installation screen, but its probably cut off. I pretty much guessed where i was clicking but used the screenshots in the wiki of this site as a guide. Also, as a recommendation, plug in an external mouse before booting the computer into the installer. the touchpad didn't work well and was being weird during installation.
The install is almost done. I'll post some picks later. Please feel free to ask questions or elaborate on anything.
p.s. I followed the ideneb wiki pretty much entirely for the installation except the part where it says "# To be sure you can select the drive and select "Partition". Press Options and you should see that the drive is partitioned as MBR$" in disk utility. I disregarded that and its probably not important anyway.

Edit1: It got stuck for a minute or so when it was nearly complete, but just leave it and it fill finish. Its now rebooting. (crossing fingers)
Edit2: Now its at the apple screen. The wheel was turning for about a minute, now it stopeed. I dont't know if its frozen or working. The HDD lite is working though
Edit3: Haha, just as i hit, save changes, it started working. now im at the welcome screen
Edit4: All is well. I had to do alot of guess clicking for setup, but its done now. I just installed the kexts and waiting for the reboot
Edit5: kext problems. not good. had to manually remove the integratedframebuffer and gma950 ones and hopfully it will boot correctly. I get a blue screen when booting up after the apple right now.

Here's where I am with my E-book. Turns out the kexts do work, but they take a minute to kick in. I have video at the proper resolution + quartz working fine. Today I will work on brightness. Sound works using the 1000h method and audiee. Speedstep works. Need to work on wifi. It seems to have a new card that noone has, made by a company called "azureware" but probably made under atheros. I'll try to get this working. Im hoping to make a writeup of installing to the 1002ha and installing via HDD when i'm done. Maybe It can go into the wiki.

Oh actually there is a trick around that that i found. When booting, add the code "graphics mode"="1024x600x32" (with the quotations) and you will get the entire picture, but stretched. you can do this until you install the proper video drivers.
As for wifi, I did quite a bit of research and basically the card should theoretically be supported out of the box but its not being recognized. I could go into more detail, but i think i will post those details on the insanely mac forums because it seems the people there know more about wifi and osx86

Here the current state of osx on the 1002HA (for me anyway):
I have tried both iDeneb and msiwindosx. The only difference is that the msi wind has the correct graphics driver built in so you can install it using the proper resolution. You still need to apply the sound fixes and other adjustments. Theres still no wifi on either System. Booting still takes about 5 minutes with both installs. I am totally lost with the wifi card. I won't think about buying a compatible one unless all the other issues are fixed first, namely the enormous booting time. A possible fix for this problem would be to use a modded bios, but the OSROM site has yet to release one for the 1002ha. If they received more requests, maybe it will become available sooner. If anyone has gotten this netbook to work well under osx, please share your experience. Thanks

As there is no prepatched BIOS you can always give fassl's DSDT patcher a go. http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=133683 You'll also need to change the bootloader over to one that supports DSDT patched files so it loads when you start up. There are a couple of them that are acceptable and you should only have to copy the new boot file to the root of your HD and replace the one that is there to change the bootloader. Netkas' PC_EFI V9, Mackerintel's modified Chameleon or Munky's 6.1 bootloader all support DSDT patch. The post I linked to has the link to Mackerintel's modified Chameleon. There's a link to Munky's bootloader over in the instructions on dual booting a retail install at http://ipis-osx.wikidot.com/forum/t-116781/dual-boot-asus-xp-and-os-x-retail-install

Hope that helps,

Toonces

after alot of reading, I feel more familiar with what EFI_V9 and DSDT is and all that. I found that nik has a guide on installing DSDT and EFI V9 here and there is a guide on DSDT for the 1000h here. Would it be safe to say, that if i followed Nic's guide, it would be alright? Just to be sure, none of these methods would modify the motherboard or bios, or would effect my XP partition would it?

I would absolutely love for you to make a patched BIOS! I've tried installing using both iPC's method, and this modified boot-132 method (which is supposed to allow you to update via software update): http://eeemac.blogspot.com/2008/12/installing-osx-on-eee-pc-901-or-1000.html. After I updated the ACPI driver from ASUS site, I was able to get to the Apple/Grey screen by typing in 'cpus=1' under the f8 boot options, but it freezes on the spinning loading logo. I'm pretty sure it's because my BIOS isn't patched for this type of thing. Yes, I'm a n00b, Yes I need some help.

Here's a link to the most current BIOS that ASUS offers (0403): http://dlsvr04.asus.com/pub/ASUS/EeePC/1002HA/1002HA-ASUS-0403.zip

On the page that link came from it recommends updating ACPI driver to V4.00.0009, but the only one they offer the site was much older than that. I also just checked, and it looks as though they have removed it. I have a copy of it if you need it to make the patched BIOS.

I've ran into that sorta problem. Check if you disabled multi threading in the bios settings. That happened to me one time when I forgot to disable it after booting from XP for a while. Also, from what i've read there really isn't anything significant in the newer bios. Other than the f3 f4 functions which don't do much, its pretty much the same.

That would be awesome! thanks in advance

off topic, but here a good explanation of a DSDT patch for anyone who is lost.
"My understanding of the idea is this. All BIOS's contain tables of the devices that are present in your computer and available for use by an OS which uses the information contained in these tables to initialize the devices using these settings. Now with OS X the BIOS cannot be read because it use a EFI firmware chip which is roughly equivalent to a BIOS for the same purpose what we are doing with the DSDT is injecting the values/capabilities of our devices into OS X's device tree at boot so it will know what devices we have and what they can do. Using this method allows you to not have to patch/disable/remove .kext such as the AppleIntelCPUManagement.kext which causes kernel panics on a Hack due to the mainly broken ACPI in most BIOS's then some have problems with Multi-CPU due to broken HPET implementation so the DSDT can fix these and many others like the graphics and sound fix in the other method I linked to."

Heres where I'm at. Now that you mention it, I was working on both yesterday. When i was using the ideneb distro, the audiee app combined with the other audio tools successfully got sound working. Now with msiwindosx, i'm not having success. Looking over the audiee thread on this site, it mentions that the kernal version must be 9.5. After checking my kernel, Its version 9.1. I'm not sure how to update. I think i might just reinstall with Ideneb this time.

i updated to a newer graphics kext that supports mirroring which solves my graphics problems.

As for wireless, I'm doing alot of research on this because the card that comes with the Eee is relatively rare among hackingtosh computers. Some either report it working with no problems, or not at all. A rare bunch of MSI winds, LG netbooks (forgot the model name) and rare versions of the Eee have this azureware card. The card is atheros based, so I am researching based on that, not the fact that its manufactured by azureware. I will be extremely reluctant to drop about $35 on a wireless n dell 1505 or 1510 card. I already have excellent reception with this card, so it would be tough to justify spending on another card just for OSX. Also, I have a feeling that there should be a way to get it working in OSX because other atheros based cards do work (in fact, some macs have atheros based wifi cards from what i've read). I am trying to implement a meathod that is used for other cards involving inserting the device id into the atheros kext in OSX. I gave it a shot with no success. I might have done it incorrectly, or maybe it will not work at all. Anyway for those interested i followed this guide.
The one under atheros, but based on the broadcomm guide
note: i couldn't find atheros5424.kext so i used atheros.kext instead

Any advice would be appreciated, thanks

Reinstalled with iDeneb. Things seem alot smoother now. Reinstalled everything relatively quick. DSDT, EFI_V9, GMA950, Sound fixes (which works well BTW), and all the other stuff. I've found an interesting thread pertaining to atheros wifi that I am looking into here. So far, not luck. I've downloaded Kismac which I used a few times on my imac which seems to be useful in OSX86 for solving wifi problems. No luck, but I'll keep working on it.

This is AWESOME. Houston, we have internet.
The airport extreme card i got in the mail today worked right out of the box. Now, i have internet fully working. Now i can call this the dream eee-mac computer.
-
The bootup time for me is like about a minute, maybe a bit less. And by cpu throttling do you mean speedstep? i haven't installed it yet on this installation. its on my list of to-dos

Update:
iDeneb 10.5.6 upgrade kit - i did the install and as expected the computer rebooted twice. i made sure to backup my extensions folder beforehand. After it installed, i had to restore the framebuffer and gma950 kexts and then something strange happened. Brightness all of a sudden worked. I can now brighten and darken the brightness with the fn keys but it won't go completely off.
DSDT- did the power button fix, and the fix for closing the lid which both worked without a hitch. looking to add some more fixes soon
Speedstep - installed and working great, although i still don't fully understand the program and how to effectively use it as of yet.

Microphone is a no-go, too bad. ichat and skype would be killer

Airport card - in xp, the real driver is included on a leopard on the install disk but i have neither the install disk, nor a dvd-reader. Since mine is a broadcom one, what i did was use the dell 1500 wifi driver and install it manually in xp which got it to work. in xp though, i can't turn it on or off, only via bios. in osx i can. Also, i can't turn off bluetooth from osx

  • Boot takes too long. 5-6 mins. Last time I tried DSDT patch I broke my installation and had to re-install Any help or step-by-step tutorial for fixing the boot time?
  • Battery life doesn‘t go longer than 2-3 hours. I’ve applied speedstep fix with no luck. Am I missing something?
  • Built-in microphone. I guess everybody is in the same situation….

Hello Guys!!!

Well I'm a 1002HA owner…

I just looked around internt to see if there's something for AR928X wifi cards so we 1002HA owners could put OSX on this little machines..

Found some stuff:

Apparently Snow Leopard (10.6) recognizes AR9280 and AR9281.. but no one says it works fine…

Here are some interesting links:

http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/lofiversion/index.php/t171641.html the most interesting thread is this…

http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.php/HCL_10.6.0/Portables and here we go, it is in the list of compatibility…

Anyone will get a try on Snow Leo?? I'm really out of time until january so I can't go any further with this until there… if anyone could get this to try we would be really happy

Well Well Well I think we're moving up now!!!

So 10.6 really recognizes our 1002HA Wifi!!!

I keep up with the research and I found out some issues with GMA 950 and 10.6 Snow Leo… The solution is realesed under 10.6.2 update BUTTTT everyone knows 10.6.2 update drops out ATOM support… SO we're at at dead end by now.

Let's hope ATOM returns to newer versions of the software OR someone build up a GOOD patch that will make it work under 10.6.2.

Finally, I'm using Win7 and I'd like so much to try out Snow leo with dual boot… Let's try to build a 1002HA tutorial for everyone on how to do the clean installation AND DUAL BOOT…. ???

That's all folks

10.6.2 is working just fine on Atom. The kernel patch is trivial - it will not cause any problems.
