Hi, brainlessrider!
I just downloaded http://www.ralinktech.com.tw/data/drivers/STA_RT2860%20D-1.1.1.0%20UI-1.6.8.0_2008_12_04.dmg and have installed it successfully. It would be very useful if someone could explain here what the new WirelessUtilityCardbusPCI options are (some illustrated guide). It runs and connects smoothly, but I had to enter the BIOS again in order to get the MAC address for the card. I have added the new AwakeRalinkUI to my login items and have left there the old/new WirelessUtilityCardbusPCI. What I like is that the utility pane is now fully minimizable. it is not needed to disable/enable the WiFi off and on. The ugly icon has gone and the Wireless Utility has two new panes I would like to know more about. I have tried to find a guide with no success.
EDIT I was wondering if this gonna work for us (Eee PC 1000H): http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=135572 It is about the new Atheros AR5007EG and I am really interested if anyone more experienced can tell us more.

Well, on start my Wi-Fi is recognized and the Wi-Fi session is opened automatically. No more bothering pop-ups. I am not sure what I did exactly because I am new in these things. The Ralink Wireless Utility loads and stays docked while I had to wait few more seconds before it connects to the router! Great! Meanwhile, I did all updates from Apple Software Update:
2008-12-12 13:09:22 +0200: Installed "Remote Desktop Client Update" (3.2.2)
2008-12-12 13:09:29 +0200: Installed "Migration and DVD ⁄ CD Sharing Update" (1.1)
2008-12-12 13:10:12 +0200: Installed "iTunes" (8.0.2)
2008-12-12 13:11:06 +0200: Installed "Java For Mac OS X 10.5 Update 2" (1.0)
2008-12-12 13:31:23 +0200: Installed "QuickTime H.264 Compatibility Update" (7.5.5)
2008-12-12 13:37:15 +0200: Installed "Security Update 2008-007" (1.0)
2008-12-12 13:41:22 +0200: Installed "AirPort Extreme Update 2008-004" (1.0)
2008-12-12 13:51:14 +0200: Installed "Safari" (3.2.1)
I believe the automated discovery started after I did "AirPort Extreme Update 2008-004", but I can't prove it. This is just an assumption. I really need someone more experienced to check these new drivers and comment what can be done to improve the situation. Last, I had to visit BIOS as usual on each restart, otherwise the Wi-Fi is not recognized (MAC address).

Thanks for your feedback.
The fact that you have to re-enable wifi into BIOS on each restart is very strange because I don't have to do this on my 1000H… After the driver update, I've made a little automator script that launch and quit Ralink app to activate connection and that's all…
Maybe I was not clear in my statement. I got the Wi-Fi enabled in BIOS. I just enter there, and exit with no action because I noticed before this drivers' update that if I do that the MAC field in the Ralink utility is left empty and it is not possible to connect to the router. Well, I will try now not entering there to see if this has changed or if this was not true at all. ;) The other thing is that I don't had this script before and the current drivers came as big relief. OK, I will try and report. Could you investigate the insanelymac link (above) and tell us what you think about it?

The new drivers work great, but how do I get it to minimize on startup. I have to do it myself everytime. Thanks
In SysPrefs > Accounts > Login Items - click the box next to the Ralink startup item for "Hide".
has anyone tried if these new drivers work with the time machine fix that broke the previous drivers?
OK, here is a small script I permuted some times ago to a bundled app, so it loads on login and kills the ugly Ralink popping UI. I use lot of Spaces and do lot of multitasking, so having the ugly Ralink window on every login was a real nightmare. This may be useful to someone still using like me the default Wi-Fi card… Feel free to improve!
Unpack and put wherever you want it to be and add it to your Login Items in Account Preferences. Ticking or unticking Hide does not have effect as this UI-less app. Enjoy! The next time OS loads it will wipe it to the Dock.

Putting an alias on the Desktop or adding a keyb key to it is even smarter, as the nasty Ralink is always there waiting to resurrect from Dock or escaping under your fingetips! <grin>

Very nice, can you do the same but to quit the Ralink application?
Because I saw that this App was taking a lot of power, it increases the CPU power consumption. Just check your power using GenericCPUPMControl, and you'll see the voltage making jumps when the Ralink tool is launched. And this utility doesn't need to be awake to have a wifi connexion because the first time it starts it connects your Mac to your Wifi router and then you don't need this app anymore.

After eeepc goes in sleep state, it needs the application to launch again on wake up in order to get wifi working again, by keeping it on dock, it works nicely, but quiting it will need a new launch on wake up.
I hope someone can fix that too, maybe by calling the app again and killing the process.
Ralink utility just enable wifi to get connected to the network, once it has done this, there is no need to keep it running, but indeed if you get disconnected you need to launch it once again :/
Well don't worry about creating a modified version of your applescript, I tried to do it this morning and saw it was impossible to quit the app after the network turn on. I just do it manually.

this is appleScript to kill < WirelessUtilityCardbusPCI>
set app_name to "WirelessUtilityCardbusPCI"
on kill_process(process_name)
set Thereis to false
tell application "System Events"
set TheList to get name of every process
repeat with i from 1 to the count of TheList
if item i of TheList contains process_name then
set Thereis to true
end if
end repeat
end tell
if Thereis is true then
tell application process_name to quit
set Thereis to false
end if
end kill_process
kill_process(app_name)
The problem is not to kill the app. It can be done using the quit command. The problem is to do it when the app has connected your Mac to the Internet…

with <appleScript>
we can execute < WirelessUtilityCardbusPCI >
in other word
execute < WirelessUtilityCardbusPCI >
wait 20s
kill < WirelessUtilityCardbusPCI >
1 execute <wifi util>
2 wait 30s
3 kill <wifi util >
set app_name to "WirelessUtilityCardbusPCI"
tell application "Finder"
launch application "WirelessUtilityCardbusPCI"
end tell
delay 30 -- seconds
on kill_process(process_name)
set isAlive to false
tell application "System Events"
set TheList to get name of every process
repeat with i from 1 to the count of TheList
if item i of TheList contains process_name then
set isAlive to true
end if
end repeat
end tell
if isAlive is true then
tell application process_name to quit
set isAlive to false
end if
end kill_process
kill_process(app_name) -- kill
delay 2 -- wait
kill_process(app_name) -- one more
Hum so it is faster to do it manually, because at launch the Ralink utility pops up. So the quick shortcut Ctrl+Q is better… isn't it?

@ corok: my code is much more simple and effective.
@ thireus: well a did a new bundled app "HideAndQuitRalink.app" that I will upload any minute after I add custom icons to both apps. Have tested it here and it is working just fine, waiting for the Ralink utility to connect and then quitting it. :)

Ok great! If that works better this way :)

Please, check if the "quit" version of the app works for you… Icons added, but I still don't like them. I did updated the iDisk link in my initial post. I think you should add the app to be the last login item (see the attached picture). Also, you can put an alias to your Desktop of HideAndSeekRalink and you can use it to open the utility.

Hi
If you're still — just like I am — using the original Ralink Wi-Fi card (RT2860) here you may find a link to the updated Ralink NIC driver & utility bundle. It works seamlessly.
