snickersmdsnickersmd 1250809820|%e %b %Y, %H:%M %Z|agohover

Hi everyone,

If anyone has noticed, I haven't been active with this group in over half a year. I finally sat down and implemented the logo design provided by our wiki member Elroy, but I have little time to do much else.

I am happy to see that this community is still thriving and active without me. I would like to ask for the following:

Will someone please update our front page to reflect the full working status of OS X on the ipis? The text that is there still talks about how there is no sound or ethernet. I frankly don't know what to say there especially with regards to the newer ipis models, so will someone mind compiling the latest stuff from the forum threads? Thanks!

Secondly, I've appointed moderators to watch over the forum, but I'd like to pass on the admin torch as well now. If there are any moderators here that would like to have some privilege upgrade to better manage the site and its content, please PM me.

I'm not leaving, I just don't visit as often and I would like to leave the group in better, more available hands.

Thanks everyone,

snickers

Good idea snickersmd!
(and welcome back)

I've been thinking about the first page for a long time, it's really out-of-date. (nice logo btw!) But keep it simple! I think everything written on the first page will be obsolete quite fast. So why not just let the forum page be the first page like many other forums. Then we don't need to change or update, that's only time consuming.

Another question is what kind of keywords the forum have. I just passed by MSI Winds forum the other day and saw a post on a guy searching for 1000H and efi booting w/ retail. He didn't know of this forum even if (he said) he had searched. So he was happy finding Ipis!

Ok, so simplicity and good keywords.
Anyone?

/Fred

So why not just let the forum page be the first page like many other forums.

Because the ipis site was originally intended to be a wiki + forum, much like InsanelyMac. In practice, it looks like the forum is the only feature being used… some moderators used to update the wiki, but we didn't seem to get the full enthusiasm of the community to keep the wiki up to date with the forum.

I still think having a wiki is important. Standard guides should be maintained for newbies without forcing them to read through every thread post to find the information they need. How many of us are familiar with the typical newbie who doesn't even search thoroughly, and starts a new thread to ask questions that have already been answered over and over again? This is the intention of the front page, to let first time visitors know at a glance, what we do here, and what they can do with their ipis netbooks.

As for search keywords, we are the first ranked page to come up in Google for "ipis" ;)

Seriously, I just did a Google search for eeepc and osx, and we don't even show up. There's apparently an abundance of blogs, and the top result is the wiki over at wikispaces. I don't understand, since EeePC and OS X are mentioned liberally throughout the main page and forum. Our page rank needs more links, rather than keywords. People who like this community while participating in others will help us by posting links back to us here.

Hi again snickersmd,

In practice, it looks like the forum is the only feature being used…

Well sometimes things sometimes don't turn out as expected, which doesn't mean it doesn't work. It works only differently, which I personally think is the charm with the internet and a forum like this one. It follows the needs. If the wiki feature doesn't attract and the forum does, it's a indicator of what will last.
So I'm still with the idea of simplicity, because I think simplicity lasts.

Regarding the cockroach, I came to a 2nd thought. My instinct when I see one (saw one this morning) is to smash it because I associate it with dirt or filth. Something I definitely don't want in my house. So have that animal in the upper banner as a logo, might trigger that instinct. Do we want to communicate that?

Now this discussion can lead us of topic. The major question is still there, who wants to accept the admin torch…

Regards,

I know it is too personal, but please remove the Elroy's graphics! It is not appropriate. I don't believe a cockroach is the main stream of our community, if you get me what I think; and there is that "ipis OS" non sense. There is no "ipis" something, there are apple's things. And the part of your expose where you wonder why we are not goooglable as a site, is because again of this unknown and useless word of "ipis" (the way it is written). Just keep it simple, or revert the site to "no graphic".

Regarding the usage of the cockroach, I understand that some people don't find it as cute as I think it is. No one is forcing that on you. When I started the community, it was my prerogative to bring my little inside joke to the forefront of the Internet. I was amused that people that did not speak Filipino chose to adapt ipis as a shorthand name for our tiny netbooks. A lot of people come here and start using the term. Some of you choose not to. That is an individual choice.

As disgusting as you may find it… it's a single logo. And it's NOT the reason we don't show up in Google. You are implying that just because the word ipis is present, then Google's search bots overlook the EeePC and OS X throughout the site? No, that doesn't make sense. If you don't like the logo, it's not like it's on the page background. Given the screen size of a netbook, the second you scroll down to read anything, the logo is gone. So what is the big issue?

Google ranking is based on LINKS. (PageRank on Wikipedia) Blogs and other forum posts that link here raise our presence on Google. There's no need to add or change keywords. All the necessary words are here just by talking about the things that we do - get OS X running on an EeePC/ipis. If anything, I'm starting to wonder if maybe it's a Wikidot thing that we aren't being indexed properly.

Furthermore, the very idea of installing OS X on non-Apple hardware means that we cannot mention or use Apple branding. It is my creative right to gather a group together and say, we'll call this an ipis group. InsanelyMac doesn't specifically mention Apple in its branding, and yet it is the central site for OS X 86.

This site has been up for almost a year now, and many people have taken to the little cockroach joke I started. You don't have to like the joke, but I resent that you call it "non-sense". The sense is explained on the first page. If you think it's funny, you use it too, if you don't, you've been coming here anyway. People aren't going to stop searching for how-to directions on a retail EFI install on the ipis forum just because there's a cockroach in the logo. What about the band Papa Roach? I'm sorry to say, roaches are common in the media as well. As long as we're not advertising food, I don't think it should even be an issue.

Let us move from the issue of the logo. Allegri was right in saying that this would lead off topic. It was chosen by my discretion as admin, as was the name of the site, and the origin of that name. I don't mean to sound harsh, but since it is clearly explained on the site homepage that the ipis joke is homage to my Filipino heritage, to call it nonsense outright is offensive, and I don't want to discuss it further.

As for the viability of the wiki, Allegri is right. It isn't being used. I think the best compromise would be not to remove it altogether, but to change how it is being used. It takes too much time for people to write guides in the threads, let alone format them for wiki pages.

Why not use the wiki as an index? It would not be the same amount of work as actually rewriting guides. A page could be as simple as, 1000HE Summary, and you click on it, and then inside, just links to relevant forum threads with brief headings.

Snickersmd,

Of couse one can to feel offended and personal about this. It can then be important to recall that when Ipis started it was a relief compared to maceee.com which was impossible to follow. Ipis has/will probably help/ed many in getting the best of two worlds: a great netbook with a great OS. I'm impressed by all efforts and willingness to contribute and Ipis serves that purpose.

So with or without cockroaches, let's look upon this constructive. How to improve accessibility? Forum/wiki? And as snickersmd announced there is a need for a admin for Ipis, so let's continue there…

regards,
